Why do people say sound rolling and sound speed?

Why do people say sound rolling and sound speed?

The term sound rolling and/or sound speed is a carry over from the good old film days (I feel you have to say that) when it would take a bit of time to get the camera and the sound film up to the right speed for usable recording otherwise the sound and image would slowly speed up while you where shooting.

Now with digital everything is instant and even with pre roll on my machine I am technically rolling all the time with up to the last 6 seconds saved so I don’t miss that quiet surprise slate.

This is also why my website is called soundrolling.com because it is meant to convey a sense that I am always ready to go.
