Leverage is an exertion of force on a lever to lift something. In a business context it is used in terms of give and take of a relationship.
Now, the more valuable something is in this context means a heavier item you want to lift. In Business it’s like you both sitting on a seesaw. Whoever has more weight in terms of reputation or offering etc… wins.
Leverage is often seen negatively in the media because wit leads to exploration and other things. But in your freelance career it’s actually a way to keep clients happy and in debt to you, hopefully not financially.
What it takes to get leverage is to invest more in a relationship than the other person. Not all or nothing mind you, if there is no reciprocation then it’s likely the relationship is too unbalanced.
It’s an art as much as a science as everyone is different. I’ll not go on and on with all the different variations and leave you with hopefully a shorthand list:
– Give 51% and receive 49%
This is what Gary Vaynerchuk says he does in his ventures.
– Always build your skill set
Not just in your core area but the more you know the more valuable you are in terms of your skill set.
– Add more value
If you can find more ways to solve different problems for your clients then the more valuable you are to them and the more leverage.
Go forth and secure those relationships with clients that hopefully if you have the right ones will last you a lifetime.
