Q&A #25 - Second Hand Fake Sennheiser 416 Mics

ID a fake Sennheiser 416

This is a great question about identifying fake Sennheiser 416 short shotgun microphones on Ebay. There where more resources available online but sadly they have been taken down. Essentially this breaks down into a the following issues:

If its too good to be true it probably is: fake Sennheiser 416

This is basically that if you bought this mic new then it would be about £650-850 range depending on a google search I did at the time of writing. Anyone selling a second hand one would want to look up this price before selling it and then because this is well known, thus holds well in value. They would then sell in line depending on quality.

Tricky China

Lots of the fake Sennheiser 416 seem to come from china and cheap prices like £200 and have dodgy labels or can’t provide all the packaging. It’s always better to buy from local groups in your area and have a chance to see mics in person if possible.
